Regulations of the KIT Department of Architecture on attendance in courses
The KIT is an on-campus university. Therefore, courses are usually held in person and students are expected to attend the courses on site.
Courses such as seminars, exercises, supervision, interim and final critiques, excursions and tutorials require regular attendance, as the content and discursive processing of the topic can only be achieved together with all participants in the course.
For these courses, students must excuse themselves as early as possible (but no later than on the date) by email or in paper form, stating reasons, if they are unable to attend; in the event of illness, a medical certificate must be enclosed.
A maximum of two appointments may be missed with an excuse, in which case a substitute or additional performance will be determined by the examiner for passing the examination. If three or more dates are missed, the course examination is deemed to have been failed. This also applies if an appointment is missed without excuse.
If participation in an excursion is not possible with an excuse, a substitute must be provided in all cases. Costs for services that cannot be canceled must also be paid for non-participation. Unexcused absence from an excursion leads to failure of the corresponding examination. If an excursion is part of the course, the excused absence from the excursion is considered a missed appointment.
The examiner may make different arrangements for individual courses. These must be made known to the students at the beginning of the course.
If it is not possible to attend courses in person due to chronic health restrictions, an application for compensation for disadvantages must be submitted. An individual solution may then be found.

Coursework presentation as part of a seminar (SPO BA 2022 and MA 2023)
In the event of unexcused absence from the presentation date or last-minute cancellation (less than 24 hours before the date), the performance will be recorded as "failed".
If this can be organized in time, there may be the possibility of a repetition in the same seminar and then also the possibility of submitting a term paper.
This regulation does not apply to students of the SPOs 2017, as the registration for the examination involves a combination of presentation and term paper.
Excursions
In the case of excursions, the scope of the work to be completed is determined and communicated by the lecturers at an early stage (participation in preliminary and follow-up meetings, work to be completed during the excursion).
Participation and completion of all components of the excursion is mandatory. An excursion report of 5,000 characters must be submitted on Ilias (Postbox) four weeks after the end of the multi-day excursions.
Guest lectures
The attendance of six guest lectures from the Art History or Architecture teaching units replaces the provision of one excursion day. Participation in the guest lectures takes place exclusively in presence. Students must have their attendance certified on site by the person responsible for the respective lecture by means of a signature.
Conferences
Attendance at conferences must be approved in advance by the Examination Board for Art History. It is generally also possible to attend conferences online. A conference report must be submitted within four weeks of attending the conference: This contains a short summary of all lectures (character limit: 500 characters per lecture) and a summary (own evaluation of the conference results in 1,500 characters).
