Our society is currently facing major challenges: Climate change, the decline of resources and increasing digitalisation raise questions about the future design of our environment. The KIT Department of Architec- ture aims to make relevant and responsible contributions to solving these questions through teaching, research and innovation.

Tradition of Innovation

The history of the department dates back to the founding of the University of Karlsruhe in 1825. Back then education at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic School consisted of a close combination of theory and practice, which became a model for many German-speaking universities. The development of the Karlsruhe Department of Architecture can be traced through numerous well-known names: from Friedrich Weinbrenner and Johann Gottfried Tulla to Heinrich Hübsch and personalities such as Egon Eiermann, Fritz Haller and Dieter Kienast. In the polytechnic tradition, "researching architects" are still concerned with applying scientific knowledge and design skills within the context of a social mission.

Teaching

The Department combines its long tradition with practice-oriented and contemporary teaching that addresses the urgent questions of sustainability, technological development and social responsibility. The aim is to recognise potentials, conduct innovative research and tackle the challenges proactively and openly. To this end, 22 professors and a broad-based teaching staff are currently available to the approximately 1,000 students. The professorships offer a comprehensive range of courses with the possibility of setting one's own priorities. In addition, international guest professors regularly expand the range of courses on offer.

Facilities and equipment

During their studies, students also benefit from the facilities and equipment of the KIT department. The Southwest German Archive for Architecture and Engineering (saai) should be mentioned here, as well as the specialist library for architecture and the department's own materials library. Well-equipped study facilities support the implementation of design ideas, as do the computer and plot pools that are accessible around the clock.

Network

The KIT Department of Architecture has an excellent network, both in Karlsruhe and the sur- rounding areas, as well as on a national and international level. There are cooperations with numerous local and national cultural and art institutions such as the ZKM, the HfG Karlsruhe and the Erich Schelling Foundation, as well as with over 50 international partner universities in Europe and overseas.

Perspectives

Our alumni work in renowned architecture offices and cultural institutions at home and abroad. Even during their studies, they benefit from a network with close contacts that Is very helpful in providing targeted assistance with regard to finding internships and jobs. The location of Karlsruhe as a place to work and the proximity to the cultural and architectural centres of Munich, Stuttgart as well as Basel and Zurich is an advantage for the graduates.
