The BIM Award 2018 in the teaching category goes to KIT.
For the interdisciplinary BIM module carried out in the summer semester 2017, the Department of Building Lifecycle Management (Prof. Dr. Petra von Both) at the Department of Architecture together with the Institute of Technology and Management in Construction (Prof. Dr. Shervin Haghsheno) at the Department of Civil Engineering received the BIM Award 2018 of the BIM Cluster Baden-Württemberg in the category Teaching on April 10, 2018.

Since the introduction of BIM not only brings changes with regard to traditional work processes in construction, but rather offers great potential for more efficient and error-reduced planning and realization of construction projects, it is necessary to prepare students for these new digitized ways of working.
To this end, an interdisciplinary module was initiated in cooperation between the Department of Building Lifecycle Management headed by Prof. Dr. Petra von Both and the Institute of Technology and Management in Construction Operations headed by Prof. Dr. Shervin Haghsheno. The module was developed and implemented by Ms. Ivonne Zelling and Mr. Maximilian Deubel, who work as research assistants at the two institutes.
The module links the teaching concept of architectural design with the application of the BIM method. Within the framework of an interdisciplinary student design project with a strong practical orientation, students are taught the BIM method not only in theory, but especially in practical application.
"The combined teaching and application of BIM methods within the framework of concrete student design tasks enables us to focus much more strongly on the level of planning and cooperation methodology. From our point of view, this represents an important unique selling point, as it enables a much more reflexive approach to and handling of the BIM method," added Professor Dr. von Both.
The students gain in-depth knowledge of the BIM processes through the independent development of a design (3D) to the construction process simulation (4D) and cost calculation (5D) with the help of these digital working methods. In addition, they get to know the respective other specialist disciplines and gain insights into areas that are not dealt with in depth during their own studies. After all, it is only when the cooperative working method BIM is actually implemented and applied that its potentials become clearly perceptible for each individual.
"Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Ms. Zelling and Mr. Deubel, we ensure that our students receive a first-class education in the field of BIM as well," Professor Haghsheno praised the two people responsible on the sidelines of the event.
The BIM module will continue in the summer semester 2018 with the topic "How do you want to live?" and the design task of developing a student residence on the South Campus.
