The lecture will discuss the phenomenon of temporary intrastructures and what contemporary architecture can learn from temporary structures. This topic is explored in the upcoming publication by Kosmos Architects, ConTemporary ArchiTecture, and will be illustrated in the lecture through several projects by the office.

About the book:

Temporary Tecture is an observation and reflection on the significance of temporary infrastructures in the city. Not only do these structures ensure the functioning of numerous processes—from construction and dismantling to orientation and protection—but they also significantly shape the cityscape. Despite their omnipresence, the reflection on the meaning of these structures, both in professional discourse and public perception, is disproportionate to their scale of application and significance for the built environment.

This book aims to delineate the phenomenon of temporary structures and offers a new perspective on what is described here as a type of contemporary vernacular architecture. It shows that these structures of necessity even offer an architectural language from which architects can learn in terms of adaptability, use of local resources, circular economy, and conceptual radicalism. Ultimately, it poses the question: How permanent should architectural solutions be in a continuously changing world? It explores how this ephemeral urban layer can inform the way we create architecture in the current state of transition within the construction industry, that faces multiple external challenges.
